The evolution continues: world-class music, soloists
Victoria Symphony (VS) The evolution continues in the 2018/19 season with Maestro Christian Kluxen entering his second season as Music Director.

This season will again feature the VS performing over 50 concerts in theatres and throughout Greater Victoria and the Island communities. The VS is thrilled to present three spectacular Masterworks series at the Royal Theatre in addition to the Classics series at the University of Victoria. VS Pops and Concerts for Kids as well as the New Music Festival and Holiday presentations will round out another remarkable season.

The Masterworks Series features a triumphant and bright season opener in Mahler’s ‘Symphony No. 4’ with soprano Leslie Ann Bradley. Wagner’s ‘Lohengrin’ with the Victoria Choral Society, Beethoven’s ‘Eighth Symphony’ as well as an all-Russian program, VS-own Concertmaster Terence Tam playing Shostakovich are all highlights this year.

The VS will continue the tradition of welcoming world-class soloists including Daniel Hass, Stewart Goodyear and Leonardo Colafelice. International conductors David Danzmayr returns and Giordano Bellincampi makes his debut. Audiences will be delighted by VS soloists Christi Meyers, Victoria Lindsay and Ryan Cole.

The Classics series features acclaimed violinist, Tasmin Little who will weave together excerpts from Vivaldi’s ‘Four Seasons’, Panufinik’s ‘Four World Seasons’ and Piazzolla’s ‘Four Seasons of Buenos Aires’. International pianist, Lukas Geniusas will be performing the beautiful, intimate and powerful ‘Piano Concerto No. 2’ by Brahms and Tania Miller returns to conduct Bach featuring pianist Charlie Albright.

New Principal Pops Conductor, Sean O’Loughlin joins the VS artistic team and is starting off the VS Pops season with ‘Broadway & Bernstein’. Through the season, he will delight audiences with music from ‘Star Wars’ and a tribute to Queen and the first ever presentation of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ accompanied by live orchestra.

VS favourites, the Irish Tenors, return to Victoria for an evening of Celtic melodies and holiday tunes at Christmas time. Giuseppe Pietraroia will take the baton to conduct both this year’s ‘Messiah’ and ‘A Viennese New Years’. This year’s festive Holiday Pops will see new life as Sean O’Loughlin conducts festive family favourites.

In the Explorations series, the VS features a concert inspired by the death of cyber-bullied teen, Amanda Todd, in ‘My Name is Amanda Todd’. Another titled ‘Bondarsphere’ pays tribute to the remarkable life of Canadian, Roberta Bondar. Finally, the New Music Festival features a concert celebrating works composed by former VS Composers in Residence as well as ‘Singing the Earth’ highlighting the beauty of Bella Coola.

It’s an exciting time for the VS and a thrilling lineup of diverse concerts. See you at the Symphony!
