RENT

Five-hundred-twenty-five-thousand, six-hundred-minutes — how do you measure a year? Asks the cast of RENT in one of the show’s most memorable songs, “Seasons of Love.”

Based loosely on Puccini’s “La Boheme,” Jonathan Larson’s ‘RENT’ follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York’s Lower East Side in the late 1980s.

How these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, losses, loves and conflicts provides the narrative thread to this ground-breaking musical.

With songs that rock and a story that resonates, ‘RENT’ is about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, ‘RENT’ has become a pop cultural phenomenon. Exploring themes surrounding the fragility of life and the power of friendship, the show also deals with social problems including drug addiction, gentrification, and the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Still, ‘RENT’ is primarily a celebration of life. As Mark proclaims in another notable song, “La Vie Bohème,” “the opposite of war isn’t peace, it’s creation.” This is theatre at its best — exuberant, passionate and joyous. How do you measure a year? Measure in love.

SHREK: The Musical

“Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek ...” And thus begins the comedic tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue.

On his seventh birthday, two ogre parents send their son Shrek out into the world to make his living. They warn him that because of his looks, humans will hate him, and the last thing he will see is an angry mob before he dies. Some years later, an embittered, grown-up Shrek is living contentedly alone in a swamp. However, his solitude is disrupted when a band of fairy-tale misfits show up on his property.

Throw in a short-tempered bad guy and a cookie with an attitude and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there’s one on hand...and his name is Shrek.

Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film, ‘Shrek: The Musical’ is a Tony Award-winning fairy tale adventure that brings all the beloved characters you know from the film to life on stage, and proves there’s more to the story than meets the ears.

Irreverently fun for the whole family, ‘Shrek’ proves that beauty is truly in the eye of the ogre.
