Medival to modern choral music

The Victoria Philharmonic Choir’s (VPC) 2018-19 season begins and ends in the English choral tradition — opening with a performance of contemporary music by composer, John Rutter.

Requiem: Saturday, Nov. 17, 7:30 p.m. First Metropolitan United Church

Inspired by Gabriel Fauré’s ‘Requiem’, composed a century earlier, Rutter’s setting of the Latin mass for the dead, with additional psalms and biblical verses in English, is hailed for the purity of its vocal lines and sense of consolation. It has been a hit with choirs and audiences since its completion in 1985.

The VPC’s ever-popular Family Christmas Carol Sing-along returns Dec. 21. On Easter Saturday, Apr. 20, 2019, Peter Butterfield conducts the 85-voice choir, double orchestra and soloists in J.S. Bach’s monumental ‘St. Matthew Passion’.

In June, the choir explores the richness of English Church music from 16th century polyphony to 20th century organ anthems with organist Donald Hunt at Christ Church Cathedral.
