New Music Technology Lab and Open House
This month marks the official launch of the Victoria Conservatory of Music’s (VCM) new Music Technology Lab. Located at the VCM’s downtown location in what was formerly a more traditional theory/composition classroom, state-of-the-art iMac workstations, audio equipment and industry standard software now await students who have an interest in the burgeoning field of music technology.

Outfitted with a multi-channel audio system, the room allows students to hear their creations and discuss with their instructor and peers. The traditional blackboard is replaced by a large Smart TV that allows the VCM to connect live with industry professionals and mentors around the globe.

Students have the opportunity to learn about performing live with electronic and virtual instruments, including polyphonic synthesizers, sequencing, Ableton Live PUSH, electric 4- and 5-string violins and more.

“The new Music Technology Lab enables students to be more creative with music, in the areas of writing, recording and performing,” says Stephen Green, VCM Dean. “It means VCM can provide a more relevant and essential pathway to learning about the newest advances in music technology as they relate to students learning music. It connects them in a broader way to the music industry of today, and prepare them for a possible future career in this expanding area.”

To introduce the new lab, the VCM is offering six FREE introductory workshops, helping them discover the possibilities in the partnership of music and technology.

Workshops will be held weekly on Saturdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Music Technology Lab at 900 Johnson St., starting Sept. 15 for 6 weeks, until Oct. 27, excluding Oct.6.

The VCM extends its enormous gratitude to donors Pitt and Sheila Linder, who have underwritten the cost of developing and launching the Music Technology Lab at the VCM.
