Energy, skill and passion
Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra Yariv Aloni, Music Director

Sensational symphonic sounds spring from Baumann Centre in Downtown Victoria every Saturday morning. Sixty-five exuberant young musicians — friends and collaborators committed to their musical craft — make up the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra (GVYO). Expressive, focused and adventurous, the GVYO is respected as one of the finest youth ensembles in the country.

GVYO players are guided by Maestro Aloni and a faculty of Victoria’s top musicians through rehearsals, workshops and sectional coaching sessions. They develop musical style, ensemble skills and teamwork. With discipline and initiative, senior players inspire their younger colleagues, who embrace new repertoire with energy, enthusiasm, and imagination. Over the years, the GVYO has been further enriched by internationally esteemed guest artists such as Sir Yehudi Menuhin, Jonathan Crow, Ben Heppner and Timothy Vernon.

The results are performances of an impressive calibre, and invaluable experience for young people who mature not only as musicians, but as contributors to their community. For 33 years, the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra has enchanted audiences across Vancouver Island and as far afield as the Kootenays, Haida Gwaii and Yukon Territory. GVYO alumni are found in ensembles, orchestras and academies throughout the world.
