St. Luke’s Players celebrate 70th anniversary season

In 1949, a group under the leadership of Mrs. Flora (“Nicky”) Nicholson began life as the Doncaster Players. The following year they moved to St. Luke’s Church Hall (1888) on the corner of Cedar Hill and Cedar Hill X Roads and became St. Luke’s Players.

Today, they are a friendly and welcoming group of over 150 members (and growing), celebrating 70 years of providing the community with quality performances. The lovely costuming, incredible sets and creative period decor and furnishings capture their patrons and whisk them away into stories unfolding. Each season—October through May—the troupe puts on three plays and a Christmas Panto.

The 2018/19 season opens with the captivating thriller, Night Watch. No one, including her husband, a psychiatrist, and her old friend and houseguest, believes Elaine Wheeler is seeing dead people in the window across the way. The suspense and mystery deepen toward a riveting and chilling climax.

Sleeping Beauty for Christmas: The celebration of a new darling baby princess, a nasty curse from an uninvited guest and the banishment of pins from the land … The day is will be saved “panto-style” with singing, dancing, lame jokes and silly, good fun with audience participation encouraged.

March presents the tantalizing Sherlock Holmes and the Widows of Blackmead, murder mystery. Someone is murdering the women of Blackmead Manor—a fiercely independent female academic community. Is this merely another interesting case, or a fatal trap for Holmes himself?

The season winds up in May with a funny and heartwarming comedy: Things My Mother Taught Me. Olivia and Gabe are moving into their first apartment together. After driving halfway across the country to start their new life in Chicago, can a two-bedroom apartment contain all of the love, laughs, worry and wisdom when both sets of parents show up to help?
